Using Firefox 3 Alpha

30 September 2007, 5:39 pm ISTFiled under: Mozilla

I have started to use Firefox 3 Alpha as my primary browser for a week now. This one seems to be faster than Firefox 2 and seems to consume less memory when running for a while.

Although there seems to be some caveats, (some of them maybe because of the web design) but on most part, all the sites that I visit regularly seems to be displaying fine as they should.

Will keep you posted.

Firefox does not show site with no-cache and memory cache disabled

23 January 2006, 2:25 am ISTFiled under: Mozilla

I have been experiencing Firefox taking up large amount of memory (in access of 100MB) after surfing for a while with many tabs open. So, I looked around on internet for a possible fix for the situation. After little searching, I found that you can disable the memory cache of Firefox by setting the value

browser.cache.memory.capacity=0 or
browser.cache.memory.enable=false

This did solve the problem, firefox was now using less memory than previously. But an interesteing thing started to happen. Some of the sites I surf regularly like my own digitalAmit, Sitepoint blogs and interestingly Google Desktop Search Homepage stopped displaying.

After tinkering with different attributes and values, I figured out that Firefox does not shows sites with Cache-Control: no-cache; when you disable memory cache.

Note: I am using Firefox 1.5 on Widnows. Other plateforms may not have this problem. Could someone please confirm this.

Update!: This has been already submitted to the bugzilla as bug 184304 with only one difference that instead of Cache-Control: no-cache; it is Cache-Control: no-store;

Mozilla Firefox 1.5 Beta 1 released

9 September 2005, 10:28 pm ISTFiled under: Mozilla

Mozilla has released Firefox 1.5 Beta 1. It features new update framework, better standards support (CSS2, CSS3, SVG ?), Broken site reporting tools and othe updates.

At first instance, this new version seems to be launching faster, browsing faster, scrolling smoother and taking up less memory than the previous version. But then that could be due to the fact that most of my extensions are not active (as they have not been updated for the new version). Anyways, will keep you posted if I find anything worthwile.

Also the first thing I noticed (as a web developer) is that <select> boxes now support the border as being flat. Earlier it used to show up as 3D inward no matter what you put in the CSS border tag.

Interestingly, if you view Help -> About, you will notice that the User Agent is listed as "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050908 Firefox/1.4". Firefox 1.4 ? Isn't this Firefox 1.5. Aneways I guess, the developers were so tired that they forgot to change the User Agent string.

Mozilla security vulnerability found (and fixed)

9 July 2004, 6:42 pm ISTFiled under: Mozilla

Accoring to an article in eWeek, a security flaw in Mozilla / Firefox may allow links to run arbitrary programs on your system using the "shell:" scheme. This effects browsers only on the Windows XP and 2000 plateform.

A patch in the form of extension which blocks the shell is already available. It is highly recommended that you apply the patch (extensions).

Adblock-ing in Firefox

6 July 2004, 7:56 am ISTFiled under: Mozilla

If you ask someone what they like most about the Firefox. Adblock and tabbed interface are most likely to be the answer you will receive, besides the usuals like pop-up blocker, download manager, extensions, etc.

My experience with Adblock in past few months is that you can block almost a large percentage of ads with very few expressions. I brief list of them is given below:

*/ads/* */Ads/* */ads.* */ad/* */banner/* */phpads/* *doubleclick* *fastclick* *adtech*

Oh, and you can also block the google ads with it

googlesyndication.com */pagead/*

Do let me know what expression you use for blocking ads ?

P.S. Before you start flamming, I should mention that a major portion of this list is shown on the adblock site itself.

Firefox 0.9

17 June 2004, 11:26 am ISTFiled under: Software, Mozilla

I have just downloaded the new version 0.9 of Firefox.

My inital usage tells me it has gotten faster in few areas. However, few minor problems still exists, but I find it better than IE even in its current version. Infact I use it for around 80% of my surfing with it now.
