The software and updates downloaded from the Windows Update site are saved to the %WINDOWS%\SoftwareDistribution\Download directory.
But even so, they are stored with their original name. They are stored as 40 character string like a79bcfc22f1d4c15ae4840c3d535bd203a0a7506.
To use this, you may have to rename to something like "Patch1.exe" or if you know actual file name, then to something like "WindowsXP-KB1234567890-x86.exe".
You can now save this file for later use, say when you may have re-intall Windows.
